MEAN CANDY: PAINTINGS & DRAWINGS ON DISPLAY AT VERMILLION GALLERY & BAR SEATTLE, WA, FEBRUARY 2025 OPENING RECEPTION FEB 6, 5-9PM For these new works, I chose an intentionally jarring palette of pinks, lavenders, and teal to clash with the implied violence and subtle grief of my subject matter. Each of these works started with a meditation on an image extracted from a 50-year-old small-town newspaper. I was struck by the contrast between the innocent positivity conveyed by captions such as, “Mrs. Eugene Berhow brings her son, Toby, to visit relatives in Bethany Manor” and the photo of mother and son looking absurdly—almost desperately—upset.
